Linton: building empty, Elora spa has “˜left town”™

There is only an empty storefront where a short-lived – but controversial – business once stood.

Last month, members of the community raised concerns that the Elora Holistic Spa was allegedly advertising on “adult only websites.”

Many residents took to a community Facebook page to suggest the spa, which opened in early March, was  an “adult entertainment” business.

On April 11, Centre Wellington Mayor Kelly Linton provided a quick update on the spa,  located on Wellington Road 7 on the west side of the village.

In a Facebook post Linton stated, “Over the past couple weeks, township staff conducted some background research, including discussions with key subject matter experts, to determine the appropriate way for us to address this.”

He added, “this week, township staff were set to physically inspect the premises to determine compliance with township permit requirements.”

Linton said Centre Wellington staff have confirmed “the business has left Town and their unit is completely empty.”

He added, “The township remains committed to reviewing our bylaw/enforcement practices so that we are ready if this situation occurs again.”

Previously Linton stated Centre Wellington’s zoning bylaw does not permit “adult entertainment” establishments.

“We have a very clear bylaw. If there is anything infringing on that, all efforts will be made to make sure the township enforces its bylaw,” he told the Advertiser.

Centre Wellington’s comprehensive zoning bylaw defines an adult entertainment business as any premises that offers “goods, entertainment or services … designed to appeal to erotic or sexual appetites or inclinations.”
