GUELPH – Can Lightning Strike Twice? an original play by one of Guelph Little Theatre’s own members (with permission of Canadian Playwright’s Guild) promises to keep audiences laughing in the aisles.
It certainly has it all: sex, robbery, mystery, blackmail and possibly retribution.
This farce, by Roxanne Thornton, is set in a run-down studio apartment in the heart of downtown Acton.
Howard Ducksworthy, (Ryk Simpson) the hapless hero, is a struggling writer, whose main goal in life is to win a coveted Stephen Leacock Medal for great Canadian writing.
So far, he has only achieved a job at the local rag writing obituaries.
One dark and stormy night his peaceful sleep is shattered by the harried arrival through his window no less, of his best friend Don “Juan” Defleur, (Jay Lee) and two very irate ladies determined to find this callous piece of “dog turd.”
First on the scene is the gun toting Molly (Kirsty Federico), Don’s long time benefactress.
Hot on her heels is Charlene (Grace Cowley) his sexy new mistress and the sure fire reason Molly is out for blood.
The resulting mayhem brings not only Howard’s frenzied landlady but a very officious Halton police officer to the scene (both played by Paul Elliott).
Theatre officials state audiences will be happily surprised by the many twists and turns within the ensuing action. But can lightning really strike twice? Don’s only hope is certainly to reform his lying cheating ways. But will he?
Directed by Cathy Goudie and produced by Pamela Niesiobedzki-Curtis and Robyn Jackson, the show opens May 19 and runs consecutive weekends until May 29.
Show times are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8pm and Sunday matinee at 2pm.
