Something for nothing?

Dear Editor:

RE: The sooner the better, March 14.

Ron Moore made a slight math error in comparing his carbon dioxide tax cost with his carbon dioxide tax rebate.

Canada and Ontario have a progressive tax system; in essence governments tax their taxes. Moore’s stated and accurate $152 carbon dioxide tax, taking into account HST, would have cost him $172 while his rebate of $154 would have remained unchanged.

Rather than a perceived $2 windfall Moore is actually $18 out of pocket.

To achieve true tax revenue neutrality he would have to drive about 2,000km less this year, do without natural gas heat in his home roughly four days per month and live in electrical darkness to the tune of over 300kWh (all numbers based on his stated consumption of energy).

While Moore asks “What’s cruel about that?” the cruelty lies in pretending otherwise.

Be it the laws of physics or your parents old adage, “you don’t get something for nothing” still remains true.
