Plastic poppies

Dear Editor:

RE: Salute a veteran banner program a coast to coast tribute, Nov. 7.

This article talks about how they are going to raise banners of veterans from their town.

I think that this is a very good idea, however, with this, some people might think that they do not need to do anything else. They may not think they should wear a poppy because they already have a banner of their veteran.

All the reminders you see in the papers and everywhere you go they say you should wear a poppy on Remembrance Day to honour those who died for us, yet so many do not. It is easy to get one, they are sold outside of stores and other places of business, no one should have an excuse for not wearing them.

The only issue with the poppies that we wear is that they are not environmentally friendly. Some are made of paper, but still have plastic pieces like the stem on them. Others are made only from plastic with a metal stem.

After Nov. 11, when everyone stops wearing the poppies and they are thrown out, they are brought to the landfill where they sit. There should be poppies made that are completely environmentally friendly so we can remember those who died for us while simultaneously helping the Earth.
