I feel compelled to write to address what I see as a social problem, and that is: do we care about what is truth versus what is fiction?
Are we getting to a stage where through media and other means, we are focusing on what we think so much that we don’t care about what is the truth? Is it okay to just say anything?
Truth is critical to justice. If we base our society on everyone’s opinion and gossip, we will be like waves washing to the shore and falling back into the sea, flip flopping all over.
For example, I have just heard a news report that Twitter is having many tweets coming from Iran regarding the environment that may sway thoughts on the Alberta pipeline here.
The possible interest in Iran creating environmental tweets could be that we don’t develop a pipeline but rely on Iranian oil. This was reported on a show hosted by Wendy Mesley on CBC News, The Weekly, Feb. 17. On the same show, it was reported pictures can be manufactured of people and posted which look very real. Again, this is not a truthful depiction – it is manufactured so it needs to be acknowledged as a manufactured depiction.
Whether all of us like it or not, it is imperative to have some moral code of what is right and what is wrong. This code protects all people of all backgrounds. What we say about other people, whether in the news or in the office or anywhere, is very important and must be based on truth and fact or it is slander. What happened to defending a person based on the injustice of slandering that person? The words we utter are very important.
Also, what we write about someone or an organization is very important. We will never have justice without truth. We all know a legal case can be won, but it may not have uncovered the truth. That is why some cases have to be overturned and innocent victims are released from jail.
Truth is obtained by research, by talking and understanding, by seeking it with our whole hearts. There must be a moral code of what is right and what is wrong. In this respect, yes, Christians, have a moral code under God. If you research, you will find it protects everyone. It is based on love and getting to the truth because truth is good.
Let’s continue to strive to be the “good guys” in society and pursue what is beautiful, what is right, what is good and what is truth and use our truth for the good of all people – in justice and truth.
