‘Ill-conceived route’

Dear Editor:

My partner and I enjoyed a walk along the streets that provided a view of the peaceful Grand River in Fergus.

The quietness was refreshing, conversation flowed and our spirits were enriched.

Wait a minute. We live in Alma on the newly implemented route where speeding trucks rumble noisily through our hamlet on Wellington Roads 7 and 17. Our children are not allowed near the roads as monster trucks, like dragons, shatter the quiet and threaten their safety only centimeters from the sidewalk. In some cases that distance is 23 centimetres from crushing truck wheels.

It’s not unusual to have a dozen or more semi-trucks idling at the intersections spewing toxic exhaust fumes into the air. During hot summer nights children are kept awake as the heavy trucks use their engine brakes, screeching into the intersections along this misguided route.

Centre Wellington Mayor Kelly Linton, county engineer Don Kudo, Dennis Kar, Paul Bumstead and the members of the roads committee need to resolve this calamity, show concern for all the citizens on this ill-conceived route and create a satisfactory resolution.

I am asking all readers of the Wellington Advertiser along the corridor to write to their political representatives and ask for their support to demand more from the planners to rectify and create a flexible plan for all of their constituents.

Jacobus de Bock,
Alma
