RE: Pick up litter, May 9.
I too cannot help but be furious at this battle with garbage. Every day I wake up and have to look at pieces of foam, wrappers, dog bags, cans, used diapers and more flying around my yard – and no, they are not ours!
We have a lovely pond behind us and it is extremely disheartening to see it contaminated with this garbage. It is – correction, was – a beautiful breeding ground for turtles, waterfowl, birds and more.
I am only one person; I clean up what garbage I can and it is not even mine! I feel enraged that I have to pick up after complete strangers just to enjoy my own property. This is just the beginning.
Every day I drive to Guelph on my commute and I cannot even describe how much garbage I see along the road. For instance, on Victoria Road in Guelph-Eramosa, it seems to be nice dumping ground for tied, single use bags. About every 30 feet you will be able to find one. I don’t know about you but this looks deliberate. How can it not be? A lot of them are breaking open and the contents is making its way into side steams and agricultural fields.
The Grade 2/3 class at Harris Mill Public School in Rockwood were spot on. There are no excuses; litter goes in the garbage.
Put a litter bag in your car; if it’s a windy day – skip placing your bins out and do it the following week; don’t over fill dumpsters; and if you have a dog, pick up your dog waste and dispose of it properly.
You can always pick up a free blue bin at your local township office, pay the $2 a week for a yellow bag and help keep our county greener for our future.
