COVID cases

Dear Editor:

A better way of seeing how we are doing in our fight against the COVID-19 virus in Canada, is to look at the rate of new cases compared with the total number of cases of the previous day.

It is depressing to see the total number of confirmed cases soaring upwards with each passing day; however, looking at the data that way can be deceptive. If the number of cases went from 100 to 200 in one day, that would be much worse than going from 1,000 to 1,100 in one day.

If one looks at the per cent of new cases in Canada relative to the previous day’s cases, we have gone from 43% on March 23 down to 11% on April 3. Social distancing is working!

A website that presents a lot of good data on the COVID-19 virus in Canada, including the rate described above, is covid-19canada.com/#readmore.
