Dear Editor:
I moved up to Fergus in 1996. It was early November and I was starting a job at GSW on a Tuesday. My first two nights I spent in a room above the Highlander Inn. Staff was friendly to this newcomer right from the word go. This was a trend I would recognize as my first night in Fergus unfolded. All I brought up with me from my place in Stoney Creek was a gym bag with a few clothes, my acoustic guitar and my work boots. I found myself in a town where I didn’t know a soul. That night was the first snowfall of the season and it gave this new small town a kind of Charles Dickens story “feel” I thought while walking up the hill on Tower Street.
The people of Fergus. This the real charm. My first night was filled with song among strangers. Walks around town in those early days and meeting people on the street or in places like The Fergus Market convinced me that this was the greatest move I’d ever made. Hellos from strangers on the street. Excellent people from town and surrounding villages, cities and hamlets were my co-workers at GSW.
A “Welcome Wagon” when I got into my apartment by my third day after arriving. A welcome wagon everywhere I went. The people are the real charm of Fergus. The pulse of the town is friendly.
I was reminded of all this today while picking up a few essential items in Zehrs. I applaud the staff and I applaud my neighbours here in Fergus. Everyone was courteous, patient and friendly. Quiet perhaps, but this could be understood. I applaud the staff at Pet Valu for their good nature and friendly efficiency.
I rode home not thinking about the troubles of the day. I thought instead of the great bunch of neighbours I am blessed to have. We are all blessed to have such great neighbours.
There is a lot to love about Fergus, but mostly it’s the people. Remember this. During the events of the times and as we move forward, we’re doing a great job in helping each other along. We’re a great kind and caring community. My moving to Fergus was indeed the best move I ever made, no question about it.
We’re all going to get through these days. Fergus and surrounding area will be as vibrant as ever and as laid back as we wish. A special thanks to all of you people working the frontlines. Once again, cheers!
Bruce Welton,
Fergus
