Community split

Dear Editor:

This letter is about finding common ground.

I think it is sad that “bike lanes versus parking spots” has become the focus of a debate that has split some of our community. We are all concerned about the health, happiness and vibrancy of our community, especially our downtown. Supporting our downtown is something we can all get behind.

Downtown Fergus has fabulous restaurants, grocers, barbers, hair stylists, a first-class library, theatre, professional offices, stores of all sorts including ice cream, bikes, mens and ladies wear and so on.

We want all the residents and visitors to Centre Wellington to be able to safely drive and conveniently park to enjoy the services of our downtown, We also want people on both sides of the river without cars, including kids, to be able to cycle, walk or powered wheelchair to our downtown or cross the river to the schools and neighbourhoods on the other side safely and easily.

Whatever council eventually decides, I hope the winners are the citizens of Centre Wellington including the downtown business and property owners. Let’s support our downtown for all.

Richard Smythe,
Fergus
