Mr Thorning’s piece on speed skating was refreshing, and surprising to find “improbable” as a description of Harley Davidson. One of the great athletes of the era lost under the ubiquitous corporate footprint of the muscular motor, was even better known as the fastest of the fast bicycle riders at the pinnacle of the bicycle madness of the 1890’s. His club in Toronto still exists, known now as The Royal Canadian Curling Club, and his picture still on display there along with the biggest(?)bicycle trophy, the Dunlop Challenge Cup.
