Dear Editor,
On February 8, a letter was published in The Wellington Advertiser from Robert Ward regarding Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) and how environmental handling fees are used. I’d like to assure Mr. Ward that all fees collected by OES go towards covering the program costs to collect, transport, consolidate and process electronics waste in a safe and environmentally responsible way across the province. OES is a non-profit industry funded organization that has been designated by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to manage a program that encourages responsible reuse and safe recycling of out-of-use electronics. Since beginning operations in April 2009, OES has helped to divert over 175,000 tonnes of electronic waste from landfill. In addition to waste diversion, funds are used for public education, continuous improvements in technology and program execution. For more information on the program, environmental handling fees, and to find a drop-off location, please visit www.recycleyourelectronics.ca. – Jonathan Spencer, OES Executive Director
