FERGUS – This year gave Royal Canadian Legion branches many challenges, yet the youth in their communities demonstrated their passion and desire to participate in the Legion’s Remembrance Day contest.
The Royal Canadian Legion holds a Remembrance contest every year for students in Grades 1 through 12 across the country.
Students produce posters and written submissions in either primary, junior, intermediate or senior categories.
The poster contest is divided into two categories – colour and black and white- and the literary contest has two categories – essay and poem.
Students enter through their local branch and compete at the zone level. Winning entries move on to provincial and then national level competition.
Barb Slater, at the Fergus Legion, said the branch received 290 entries from nine local schools, which is more than they had hoped.
Local winners of the zone level contest include:
Black & White Poster
– Intermediate – Brooklyn Feenstra, second place.
Colour Poster
– Primary – Fiona Stephens, third place;
– Junior – Brodie VanRaalte, third place; and
– Senior – Rebekah Harlaar, first place.
Poem
– Senior – Dianne DeBoer, second place.
The local students will be invited to a general meeting at the legion to receive their awards when it’s safe to do so.
Rebekah Harlaar’s first place senior level colour poster moved on to the District C competition and those results have not yet been provided. District C consists of four zones with a total of 50 branches. Fergus is a member of Zone C-3 with 11 other branches.
