Most people have heard of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and many are aware of the commonly prescribed pharmaceutical remedy, Ritalin.
But how many are aware there are other avenues of care that provide long-term relief?
Characterized by difficulties with attention, distractibility, excessive motor activity (hyperactivity) and impulsive behaviour, ADHD symptoms often manifest as poor academic or occupational performance, difficulties with others in school or work, aggression and what has been termed emotional immaturity.
The Mapleton Community Awareness Training Seminar (CATS) team is pleased to announce Carol McMullen is returning to Drayton on March 24 to lead a seminar on learning problems.
“In our CATS last November Carol led a workshop on learning disabilities and there was such an interest in this that we decided to host an evening where Carol can go more in depth on this subject,” said CATS chairman Jim Curry.
McMullen is a learning disabilities specialist and ADHD, Asperger’s and ABI coach. She has directed education and mental health programs in treatment centres and at the University of Guelph, consulting extensively with boards of education, government and community agencies.
She will address school issues, especially getting an IEP that works, as well as motivation, family and behavioural issues.
The seminar will include dialogue and questions from participants.
“We are encouraging all leaders of youth groups, parents, teachers, friends of youth, care supporters, youth of all ages and all individuals interested in youth to take this opportunity to learn more about how we can help our community youth cope with their struggles of life,” Curry said.
The CATS team is a group of individuals who give their time and talents to host seminars in Mapleton that are focused on mental health and learning issues. Members are: Pastor Al Dreise, Jim and Annette Curry, Teresa Dekker, Joanne Koetsier, Clara Stevens, Trudy Stroetinga, Harold and Dorothy Struyk, and Teresa Wikkerink.
The seminar will be held March 24 from 7 to 9:30pm at the Drayton Christian Reformed Church (88 Main Street East). Pre-registration is not required and a suggested donation of $10 per person would be appreciated to help with expenses. Transportation arrangements for those in need will be provided; contact Teresa Dekker at 519-638-2542 or email info@mapletoncats.org.
