On Sept. 13, Language Arts will be heading to Guelph to play Dstrct in support of its upcoming album Lemon/Lime.
Fronted by classical guitarist and song-geek, Kristen Cudmore, the band brought songs to Grammy-winning producer David Bottrill and Juno-winning producer, Joel Stouffer and together, they produced a collection of songs that travel through her time, healing from a traumatic brain injury.
“It took years, because getting hit by a drunk driver turned my body into a lemon,” Cudmore said.
“I tried so hard not to let that get me down, so I made the flavour of the music like a fresh splash of lime.”
Akin to Beck, each record is a new departure from the previous releases.
The band has created a polished sound that nods at New Wave to Vapourware, Art-Pop to Dance music. Fragments of Stereolab, Grizzly Bear, Ladytron and Psycadellic Furs can be found scattered throughout this set of work.
Language Arts had its start in 2005 and have been compared to artists like Grimes, St. Vincent, Suzanne Vega and Ladybug.
The band has toured a multitude of times across Canada and have made their way to festivals and shows in Europe, United Kingdom and the United States.
The show at Dstrct starts at 8:30pm and tickets are $10 at the door.
