CENTRE WELLINGTON – A Kitchener man already charged with dangerous driving in an August crash that left one person dead and two others seriously injured now also faces impaired driving charges.
Emergency crews responded to the collision southwest of Elora on Aug. 1 at about 9:50pm.
Wellington County OPP officials say a car with four people in it was travelling west on Wellington Road 21 near the 8th Line when it collided with a sport utility vehicle (SUV) travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver and sole occupant of the SUV was transported to hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the car also sustained minor injuries but a passenger in the car was pronounced dead at scene and two other passengers sustained “life altering injuries,” police reported.
Two days after the crash the OPP announced the driver of the car, 24-year-old Kitchener resident Ricardo Francisco Cruz Abrego, was charged with dangerous driving causing death, two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and driving while suspended.
On Sept. 23 police announced Cruz Abrego was also charged with impaired driving (by alcohol and/or drug) causing death and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
He is to appear in court on Oct. 10 and his licence has been suspended for 90 days as a result of the new charges.
