Kinsmen seek to make obstacles for truck challenge permanent

Harriston Kinsmen are seeking permission to make part of the course for their Minto Tuff Truck Challenge a permanent addition to the Harriston-Minto Community Centre grounds.

The club hosted its first challenge, which pits monster trucks and off-road vehicles and their owners against a series of obstacles, last October and plans to make the event annual.

“We are proposing the permanent placement of grandstands, between the derby ring and the river at the Harriston arena,” club officials state in a letter to council presented at the May 16 meeting.

The letter notes the structure would be built out of  large concrete blocks that have been donated, and dirt/fill, possibly from George Street when it is torn up for reconstruction.

“Our plan is to make it wheelchair accessible as well, and also build it so it is lawnmower friendly,” the letter states.

“It would save moving the bleachers in from Drew for other events as well. We’d also like to permanently place a couple of our event obstacles, as it would save a lot of work, and lower our costs. We think we have found areas on the grounds to put everything where it would not interfere with any other events hosted there.”

Council agreed to support the proposal in principal and referred the request to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee for further discussion.

Noting the Kinsmen’s long history of fundraising for community betterment projects, Mayor George Bridge told club members, “If we can help you out, we’ll work with you on it.”

The 2017 Minto Tuff Truck Challenge is set for Sept. 23. For more information visit the Harriston Kinsmen Facebook page or call Mike Wick (519-261-0306).
