Kenilworth amputee shares and learns at CHAMP seminar

Lucas Beatty, 15, recently returned home here from The War Amps 2009 Ontario Child Amputee (CHAMP) seminar in London.

Born a right arm amputee, Beatty attended the three-day seminar, which dealt with all aspects of growing up as an amputee. He was a junior counselor at the seminar, answering questions and offering advice to younger “champs” and their families.

In one session, champs demonstrated their standard and recreational artificial limbs and devices to the group. Lucas showed the devices he uses for hockey, baseball, guitar, and doing pushups.

"The seminar is a life-changing experience for both champs and parents," said War Amps Chief Executive Officer Cliff Chadderton.  "It’s a packed weekend covering everything from raising an amputee child to dealing with teasing and staring, to seeing the latest developments in artificial limbs."

At the seminar, Beatty was presented with a CHAMP ambassador certificate for taking part in a number of War Amps activities, from giving Playsafe and amputation awareness presentations, to laying a wreath on Remembrance Day in his local ceremony on behalf of the association’s Operation Legacy.

CHAMP and all its programs are funded solely through public support of The War Amps key tag and address label service.
