PALMERSTON – The 16th annual Junior Co-ed Broomball Tournament was held in Palmerston from March 9 to 12.
A total of 22 teams from Palmerston, Paisley, Seaforth, Blyth and Mildmay competed in Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget divisions.
In the Atom final Seaforth downed the Palmerston Express 1-0.
Seaforth also won the Pee Wee division, defeating the Blyth Bullets 1-0 in the final.
In Bantam play, Mildmay Underdogs downed the Benchwarmers 3-0.
The Mildmay Sharks edged Palmerston Hot Off the Ice 1-0 in Midget action.
“A lot people attended the tournament, especially parents and grandparents out to cheer their family,” states a press release from organizers Al and Connie Walters.
“Especially entertaining was the Atom teams with kids aged 3 to 8. The Peewee division kept everyone glued to their seats as some games went into a shootout.”
Volunteer effort
Organizers thanked volunteers, including timekeepers, door workers, kitchen staff, silent auction organizers and raffle ticket sellers, as well as businesses who donated items for the silent auction, and several referees who donated their pay back to the tournament.
“It was greatly appreciated,” organizers state. “Thanks also goes out to coaches who donated time and energy to the teams. Special thanks to Dana Williams the President of Palmerston Junior Broomball and his executive for all your hard work and support that went into the making of this event. Without everyone helping this tournament would not be possible.”
The tournament was successful in bringing out a number of first-time players to try the game. All proceeds go back to Palmerston Junior Broomball.
