Inaugural Drayton Sports Camp features baseball, soccer, more

The fairgrounds were buzzing with activity from July 17 to 21 as 80 children, aged six to 12, took part in the inaugural Drayton Sports Camp.

The campers had a very active, fun-filled week based on the Sports of baseball, soccer and ball hockey, with each child receiving a T-shirt, Bible, and water bottle as part of the program.

Scripture Union provided resources and five coaches (who were billeted in Drayton for the week) to lead the activities.

“An event such as this could not have run without the help of our amazing volunteers,” state organizers.

Approximately 20 adults and teens from the community volunteered their time and talents.

The group of volunteers also included several junior leaders aged 13 to 16.

“This was a great opportunity for them to shine in a leadership role, leading and encouraging the six teams of children,” organizers note.

Hot lunches were also provided daily by local churches and their kitchen staff.

The June 23 flood caused a potential threat to the camp, putting the fairgrounds under water, but thanks to local ag society volunteers, the Agricultural Hall (the old arena) was cleaned up and ready in time for the camp.

“The community support for this initiative was greatly appreciated,” organizers stated.

“A big thank you to all those involved!. Watch for registration next year, plans are already underway.”
