The music of remembrance contemplates the sacrifice of those who fought in wars past and present.
On Nov. 8, at the River Run Centre, the Guelph Chamber Choir presents a program of choral music that honours those who have suffered and lost their lives in war or in the pursuit of peace.
The choir opens the concert with In Flanders Fields, set to music by Canadian composer Paul Aitken.
That is followed by several pieces with themes of sacrifice and loss, including the premier performance of In Paradisum, by Ottawa composer Christine Donkin.
She is the winner of the Guelph Chamber Choir’s 2008 Young Composer’s competition and will be in attendance at the concert.
In the second half, the choir is joined by 30 additional singers from the Guelph community and by professional Canadian soloists to sing Beethoven’s Mass in C major, accompanied by a professional orchestra. Soloists are Rebecca Collett (soprano), Carolynne Godin (alto), Guelph’s Christopher Fischer (tenor), and Giles Tomkins (bass). Composed during the Napoleonic war in Europe, the Mass concludes with a humble plea for peace: Dona nobis pacem.
Tickets to In Remembrance are $30 for adults (four for $100), $10 for students, and $5 for eyeGO.
