Hunters fined for shooting swan

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is reminding hunters conservation officers monitor hunting on GRCA land after three hunters were fined for killing a swan in a Wellington North conservation area.

On May 16 the hunters were sentenced in the Ontario Court of Justice after pleading guilty to one count each of hunting a trumpeter swan at the Luther Marsh.

The infraction was discovered in September 2017 during a routine patrol of waterfowl hunters. A dead swan was floating in the water near the hunters. The shooting was contrary to the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994.

Combined fines of $19,000 will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund, the authority states. There is no open season in Canada for hunting trumpeter swans.
