The weather co-operated by sending the sun between major thunderstorms at the Upper Credit Humane Society’s recent open house.
Visitors took guided tours of the shelter or explored at leisure lingering with the animals for as long as they wished.
Feline residents were appreciative of the array of people ready to play and pet them, and the dogs were stimulated, even to the point of falling asleep.
Society vice-president Kathy Yorke, spoke about the history of the society from its inception in a basement to the present day. She gave the society’s thanks for the improvements that have been made due to the donation in Eleanor McEwen’s memory.
Yorke was joined by Eleanor’s husband, Murray, for the speeches and ribbon cutting. The visitors also saw a plaque unveiled in the shelter at the entrance to the wing and enjoyed hearing about Eleanor’s love of animals.
Door prizes, and refreshments helped to round out the day. It is inspiring for those involved in the challenge of finding homes for the animals to have people celebrate and realize how much work is involved every day.
The Upper Credit Humane Society exists through the generosity of public donation. The society now has a functioning office, an isolation room for sick residents, a larger intake area, a private interview and meet-and-greet room, better ventilation, new cat cages, new flooring, a painted shelter, and more.
