Belwood native Bill Hostrawser is the latest Wellington County lacrosse player to join the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League (NLL).
General manager Terry Sanderson announced on Feb. 5 that the Rock had acquired Hostrawser, who is renowned as a “gritty” defender, from the Vancouver Stealth for a third round pick in the 2014 NLL draft and a fourth round pick in the 2015 draft.
Hostrawser is one of several Rock players with Wellington County ties, joining Jesse Gamble (Rockwood) and Kasey Beirnes, Rob Marshall and Craig England (Fergus).
Hostrawser, 23, was originally selected by the Stealth in the second round (12th overall) in the 2012 NLL draft. He played junior with the Orangeville Northmen Jr. A team, winning the Minto Cup national championship in 2012.
He appeared in nine regular season games and three playoff games for the Stealth last year – his rookie season.
Prior to joining the Rock, Hostrawser appeared in six games for Vancouver this season, registering a goal and three assists in addition to seven penalty minutes and 20 loose balls.
