FERGUS – The Fourth Annual Hooves for Hospice Ride on Oct. 16 raised $9,500 for Hospice Wellington.
Several participants came out to ride with host Lynn Smillie on eight private properties. The event saw support from 45 riders, including Ontario Mounted Special Services Unit.
Hooves for Hospice is an annual charitable fundraiser hosted by Smillie and Peter Creighton, just outside of Fergus. Participants have the opportunity to ride their own horses on privately owned land.
“We are so pleased that this year we surpassed our 2020 total of $8,000 with a good bump up to $9,500 for Hospice Wellington,” organizers stated in a press release.
Each participant in the ride raised funds by collecting pledges for their ride, which was started in 2018 by Smillie, in honour of her father James Smillie.
This year, in honour of her father, Mark Cripps from the Fergus Pipe Band played before the horses set off.
