Highway 89 in Mount Forest to be repaved

A section of Highway 89 in Mount Forest will be repaved this summer.

Wellington North council awarded the tender to The Murray Group for $192,071 on July 10.

About 580 metres of Queen Street (Highway 89), from Dublin Street to Main Street South, will be resurfaced as an interim measure to a larger reconstruction project.

“The township recognizes how the proposed resurfacing is an interim measure to address significantly deteriorated road conditions and that future reconstruction, in conjunction with sewer and water main repairs/replacement, will likely require full width road excavation and replacement of the curbing and pavement structure,” interim public works director Derek McCaughan stated in a report.

Though The Murray Group came in under the $259,188 budget, McCaughan sought approval from the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to use the full amount to help prevent future cracking. The MTO is funding $233,269 (90 per cent) of the project.

“The MTO, since the timing of the report, has come back and said yes, you may spend that money on that project,” McCaughan said.

“This was an interim project, but we fully anticipate because we weren’t doing full excavation throughout, that some of the cracks that we see today will appear shortly, we’re hoping to avoid that.”

The project should take about two to three weeks.

The five bids were from:

– The Murray Group for $192,072;

– Steed and Evans, $196,296;

– Capital Paving, $211,091;

– Brantco Construction, $266,453; and

– Cox Construction, $305,940.
