Local girl Hennessey Veit has smashed her goal of raising $1,500 for school uniforms, enabling children from Zimbabwe to attend school.
She has set a new goal of $2,000 by December 2017.
On Sept. 3, Hennessey, her family and many of her friends had the opportunity to help at the Knights of Columbus breakfast held at St. Joseph Parish on St. David Street.
“I have had an awesome time giving back to my community and helping make a difference in the lives of the kids that are going to be able to go to school,” said Hennessey.
This is the Hennessey Bag Journey’s second appearance at a Knights of Columbus breakfast.
“I really like the way the Knight’s run the breakfast. The kids who are helping out are responsible for serving, clearing and cleaning the tables, teaching them about social responsibility and community,” said Christine Veit, Hennessey’s mom.
A number of kids from Fergus, Belwood, Guelph and even from Mississauga participated, alongside Hennessey.
“We were able to sell Hennessey bags and one of my friends, Harrison, donated his own money to help me reach my goal. He is great,” said Hennessey.
The Hennessey Bag Journey began when Hennessey and her mom attended the first annual Me to We Family event in October 2016.
Hennessey realized the impact she could make and how she could encourage the Centre Wellington community to make a difference too.
Throughout 2017, Hennessey has already participated in a number of events, including a Hennessey bag workshop, The CW Women’s Expo, A Hennessey Bag Journey garage sale and The Knights of Columbus breakfasts. She will be at a barbecue at the Fergus Freshco in a few weeks.
