Heels for Hospitals celebrates fifth year of unique fundraiser for local hospitals

The fifth annual Wightman Telecom Heels for Hospitals fundraiser is set for Oct. 19.

Men, women, and children from several counties will come together at the event to show their support for local hospitals by walking one kilometre (some choose to wear heels, others wear their favourite shoes).

After meeting at the Clifford Rotary Pavilion on Brown Street at 10am, participants will walk up Allan Street and back (alternate route is Brown Street).

Coordinator Hope Robertson says Heels for Hospitals, initiated by Wightman owners Paul and Blair Wightman, is another way of contributing to the community and giving back.

“It’s more important now than ever before to band together and show support for our local communities. This is just one unique way of doing that,” said Robertson.

The Wightmans will once again donate $20 for every participant in this year’s event, and this will be the second year of Wightman’s corporate and community group challenge.

Wightman is challenging local businesses and community groups to participate in Heels for Hospitals by offering a special grand prize. The team that collects the most pledges will be awarded a fully-catered holiday meal, sponsored by Wightman Telecom.

“This is an excellent way to contribute to your local hospital, and build camaraderie with your team,” says Robertson. “And the grand prize is a great reward.”

Knapp’s Shoes in Listowel has once again donated a pair of orthopedic heels for guest “walker” Craig Picton from radio station 101.7 The One. Picton will be joining in the action, wearing a pair of high heels from Knapp’s and walking with participants.

After the walk, participants will enjoy a wide array of refreshments.

Robertson, along with Carolyn Schiestel and Susan Rawn, thought the innovative idea to take pledges and walk one kilometre in high heels would be a “fantastic and fun” way to raise awareness and money for local hospitals.

All proceeds are pledged to the CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon. In its first four years, Wightman’s Heels for Hospitals has raised more than $29,000.
