Heavy rains triggered GRCA river warning

Just as school lets out and people are planning to enjoy a holiday, the Grand River Conservation Authority has issued a high water safety bulletin to advise public and recreational users of changing river conditions due to the recent heavy rainfall.

Rivers and creeks in the upper watershed had already experienced high flows the past week.  The areas around Arthur and Luther Lake recorded 100 to 115mm of rainfall over the past six days.

Officials stated higher river levels pose a risk to recreational users. Officials also warned banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and when combined with fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Parents are strongly encouraged to keep their children and pets away from watercourses.

River and creek levels were expected to remain high through the week and drop off as drier weather moved into the province. Residents along the lower Conestogo River were advised the low level bridge upstream of St. Jacobs will likely be closed for the majority of the week until water levels recede.
