Heavy Hitters is set to start its sixth season here on May 26 at 10:30am.
Last year Heavy Hitters athletes were excited the program was expanded thanks to funding. The league, which runs until August, plays T-ball one Saturday morning and then a different activity the next Saturday morning.
In past years the activities were held in a school gym, but thanks to extra funding the activities were taken outdoors. Last year athletes enjoyed fishing, go-carting, music and bowling.
This year the program includes a visit to a fire hall, glow in the dark T-ball, a visit from a championship arm wrestler who has cerebral palsy and possibly a visit from an NHL player.
Heavy Hitters athletes are children/young adults of all ages with special abilities. Walkers and wheelchairs are used on the diamond and bath mats are used for bases to wheel over – but don’t be fooled at home plate, a wheel must touch the plate for the player to be safe.
This program is free for local families and parents take turns each Saturday to bring snacks and juice for the kids. Players look forward to the award ceremony at the end of the year alongside the Drayton and Moorefield Ball Association.
Officials hope to one day have athletes on the field at the Rogers Centre to meet some Blue Jays players.
