Have a coffee break for Alzheimer’s this month and next in Centre Wellington

Sept. 17 marks the 14th annual National Coffee Break Day.

Throughout August and September businesses, organizations and individuals will host Coffee Break events to raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington.

The local caregiver support group is planning to host a coffee break in two different locations, and invites everyone to attend. The breaks are:

– Aug. 26 from 2 to 5pm at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Fergus; and

– Sept. 15 from 2 to 5pm at St. John’s United Church in Belwood.

The society needs locals to to continue supporting its fundraiser, one cup of coffee at a time.

Last year was extremely successful – the society raised an astonishing $25,079, all of which stays in local communities to support much-needed programs and services.

Dementia threatens to swamp the health-care system, and Alzheimer’s officials stress that to continue to make the community better and stronger, everyone must acknowledge this predicament.

About 8,000 people are diagnosed with Alzheimers and related dementia in the Waterloo-Wellington area.  Over half the people diagnosed with dementia are living at home with their caregiver.

The Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington is a non-profit organization established in 1987. It provides many programs and services to those affected by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia.

Some of the programs include one-on-one support, peer support groups, community education and awareness programs, volunteer companions, access to the Safely Home Alzheimer Wandering Registry and much needed respite for caregivers.
