Harriston sewage project to proceed with assistance of Building Canada funds

The Town of Minto is aiming to move ahead  with a sewage construction project in Harriston this fall.

Council approved a report on the project from treasurer Gordon Duff and director of public services Brian Hansen at the July 23 meeting.

The report notes the estimated $540,000 cost of the project was included in the 2012 capital budget.

Funding of $280,000 has already been secured from the federal and provincial governments through the Building Canada Funds.

Minto’s share will be $260,000.

The project will be the third and final phase of a major sewage upgrade project in Harriston.

This phase of the project will address problems related to the station located on John Street and the connection to the main sewage pumping station on William Street.

There have been ongoing problems with sewer backups and other capacity issues in the area.

The project involves pumping station upgrades, replacement of existing pumps, installation of a backup exterior diesel generator and construction of a new 200 millimetre forcemain directly from the sewage pumping station to the lagoons.

The direct connection is intended to ease pressure on the existing collection system and minimize downstream impacts.
