The Harriston and District Horticultural Society is celebrating its 65th anniversary by recognizing Minto residents who take extra time and effort to give the community that “wow” factor.
Three signs will be placed at local properties recognized as Gardens of the Month each month during the summer and organizers hope that friends and neighbours will nominate noteworthy front gardens by contacting president Sue Bridge (519-323-1642, george.sue.bridge@gmail.com), vice-president Jean Anderson (519-505-5914, jeanurse1@gmail.com) or Minto landscape coordinator Paul Judge (519-327-8930).
The first property recognized thought the program is located on the corner of Queen and Union Street in Harriston. Besides the beautiful beds, many immaculately lined with hostas, the property is surrounded by an eye catching wrought iron fence. The owners, Jean and Dirk Kraemer, have lived at the address now for five years and “obviously take great pride in their property,” society officials state.
Another property is located on the corner of Raglan and Queen Streets in Palmerston. Owners Joan and Greg Watson moved here two years ago from Kitchener. When asked what brought them to Palmerston – the answer – this property. The previous owner had designed the flower beds, however it takes a great love of gardening to continue on. Joan said there are over 140 hosta on their property and the Horticulture class at Norwell have helped to overwinter the water lilies that grace the little pond.
This month’s rural property can be found on the 10th line property of Elmer and Betty Dennison. The property is large and Betty takes great pride in designing and maintaining the many gardens. She uses antique farm equipment in many of the beds as accent pieces.
“She is happy to share her little piece of heaven with anyone who would like to come and visit,” society officials note.
