MINTO — The Harriston and District Horticultural Society held its summer flower show on Aug. 15 at the Harriston Community Centre with over 130 entries of flowers and vegetables.
The judge for the event was member Marie McCutcheon, who also provided tips on how to properly show some of the specimens.
Those who received special awards were: Lorna Collins for Best Rose, Cherie Seadon for Best Cut Flower, and Best Potted Plant, Mary Anne Connell for Best Gladiola and Sally Andrade for Best Design for her teapot with cup and saucer.
The guest speaker was Telfer Wegg from Neustadt, who gave a slide presentation on New Zealand and Australia.
Telfer is a well known photographer, writer, world traveler and gardener.
He has been to New Zealand and Australia seven times and has a wealth of information about the areas he has visited over the years.
Horticultural society officials said his photos were “breathtaking.”
The society’s next meeting will be Sept. 20 at 7:30pm at the train station in Harriston and the speaker will be Erin Gouthro, a watershed ecologist with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority.
Her topic will be “Gardening for bees and birds and other critters.”
All are welcome to attend.
