Harriston and District Horticultural Society flower show a blooming success

The Harriston and District Horticultural Society flower show was a blooming success on May 21.

The speaker, Marie McCutcheon of Listowel, was introduced by Mary Anne Connell. She said she gardens dirt cheap. Marie has mostly shade plants. After 35 years living in the same place, she now has 75 Hosta varieties. Her theory is laughter in a well-manicured garden is good therapy. Attendees were all invited to take a plant home.

Don Matthews reported on the flower show. Mary Anne Connell won the Rhoda Cameron award, and a $15 gift certificate from Stekle’s produce & flowers for the most points in design classes. The best tulip and narcissus (daffodil) was won by Margaret Weber. Alma Campbell showed the best African violet, Don Mathews had the best spring flower. The best houseplant was shown by Alice Douglas. Sue Bridge gave out the “Think Minto” gift certificates. There were $4,100 in gift certificates purchased for shopping in the Town of Minto.

Linda Campbell said 21 vendors are coming to the garden festival on June 7 from 8am to 2pm at the pavilion at the Harristonp-Minto Community Centre.  After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments and social time were enjoyed.Submitted by Alice Douglas
