Happy New Year

2024 is the year for you to do you. That might sound a little selfish, but from what we have seen in recent days, the world is a better place for those who do their level best for others.

On New Year’s Day a jolly elf knocked on the door at the farm. For many years he has given mom a little gift bag for letting him and some friends hunt wild game by the season. Adding to that story, he has had health problems for a few years now, but undeterred he made the trek to give thanks.

The holidays have produced their share of tragedies. It seems hard to escape the festive season without some sadness on the roads. The community has pulled together and started fundraising. Offers of help abound and we recognized a few recurrent surnames at the ready to help others.

And of course, we remain amazed by the young people in our lives – at work and elsewhere –who are great contributors and fun. They provide a constant reminder not to worry too much about the next generation and the future. There are plenty of leaders in our midst.

It will be these types of personalities, grounded in acts of kindness and decency – within families, the workplace, and the larger community – that will help tackle what 2024 has in store.

There remains little question the economy and indeed the world in which we live will remain in a state of upheaval. Easy answers to problems never seem to come, but past experiences suggest a shoulder to the wheel and adopting the ideals of lifting all boats will see Canadians through to better times.

The thing about “you do you” is it offers people a choice. People can choose to be gracious and make things easier for others or choose selfishness.

We think 2024 will be a year people gravitate to making their community stronger and better for all.
