Happenings and highlights from Wellington Terrace Seniors Home

The residents and staff at Wellington Terrace were able to enjoy many exciting programs and events during the fall. We ventured out on the bus to a variety of destinations, including Toronto, for a Blue Jays game; the Wellington County Museum and Archives; various shopping malls; and we took several country drives to enjoy the autumn leaves.

On a beautiful afternoon in September, Larry, from Penn-Tawsha stables visited with two of his horses, and the residents enjoyed seeing them on our front lawn.

Also in September, we hosted a celebration tea in recognition of Grandparent’s Day, and at the end of the month many residents were able to enjoy Smile Theatre’s production of Sweet Dreams here.

October was another busy month, with a morning Thanksgiving Service, our Monster Mash Bingo Bash, and the annual Halloween party. Bill Beattie and Friends entertained, as did all of the staff, volunteers and residents who dressed for the occasion.

In November, we held a very moving Remembrance service; thank you to all community members who came and participated.

Also in November, the residents enjoyed a visit with Piglet, the pot-bellied pig. Creative talents were showcased twice in November; on Nov. 18 we held our annual craft and bake sale one afternoon, and had a wonderful turn-out.

The staff social action team hosted our first meet and greet, where Wellington Terrace staff members were invited to feature their creativity with crafts, hobbies, and talents. We  have many gifted and artistic staff here at the Terrace.

We ended the month with the Victoria Park Line Dancers entertaining on a Thursday morning – thank you for sharing your talents with us.

We are very lucky to have several musically-talented volunteers that entertain residents during afternoon or evening programs all year; thank you to Steve Royall, The Grey Tones, The Copper Kettle Band, and Bill Beattie and Friends for sharing songs and music with us. The holiday season is now upon us, and we are keeping busy during December.  Each of our six resident neighbourhoods is holding a Christmas celebration, where each resident is able to invite two guests to accompany them to their special parties.

Some groups are also visiting us during the month, on various neighbourhoods, such as: The Centre Wellington Singers, The Hilltop Singers, the Fergus Legion and Brass Band members, Definition Fitness, Maranatha school Kindergarten class, and St. Mary grades 5 and 6; other groups are still booking into the month for visits.

Residents from each neighbourhood will be invited on an evening bus tour within the Fergus-Elora area to view the Christmas Light displays this month.

The Life Enrichment Staff will be helping with a Christmas Eve service the morning of Dec. 24, and will also be ringing in the New Year with the residents on the afternoon of Dec. 31.

Dec. 5 marked the annual International Day of the Volunteer, and on behalf of all the residents, the staff and the families of the Wellington Terrace community, we recognize and thank each of the members of our volunteer team for their continued support and commitment to the residents.

Everyone that volunteers within the Home, as well as at the Second Time ‘Round store in Elora, is very much appreciated. From all of us here at Wellington Terrace, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season, and all the best for the New Year.

Compiled by staff of the Life Enrichment Department of Wellington Terrace.
