Hair cuts raise close to $5,000 for charity

It was unclear which Haley White enjoyed more: donating her own hair to charity or manning the scissors to chop off aunt Chrissie White’s long locks.

But the 10-year-old was all smiles on Dec. 9 at the TD Canada Trust in Fergus as four locals had their long hair cut off for Angel Hair for Kids and to raise funds for the Children’s Health Foundation in London.

Chrissie White, a longtime employee at the Fergus bank, led the fundraising campaign after completing a similar one by herself four years ago.

“There has been an outstanding response. We’re so happy,” she said, adding later the total raised to date is  close to $5,000 – including matched donations from the TD Canada Trust bank, where she has worked for close to three decades.

Chrissie and Haley were joined by Kathy Bouma and Adam Richards for their ceremonial hair cuts in front of a large crowd at the bank.

Manager Hugh Calderwood praised the efforts of Chrissie White, as well as the other three hair donors, and thanked those in the audience, many of whom counted themselves as family or friends of one of the hair donors.

“I just want to thank everybody for coming in. This is terrific,” Calderwood said moments prior to the hair cuts.

Chrissie White noted everyone knows someone affected by cancer and she thanked those who donated to the cause.

She said seven other people also donated ponytails, though they did not have their hair cut the same day.

“It’s amazing how things snowball,” she said.

“Thank you all very much for supporting this campaign … It’s been great.”

But she stressed the campaign runs until the end of December. TD Canada Trust will match any monthly donations received and also issue tax receipts.
