“We are thrilled to host this exciting trio. Pat Collins never disappoints,” said Gabriella Currie-Ziegler, executive director of the Guelph Youth Music Centre. “With Tom Szczesniak on accordion and Reg Schwager on guitar, this is a unique opportunity to hear the best of jazz.”

Collins is active on the Canadian jazz scene. After appearing on more than fifty recordings as a sideman, Collins recorded his first CD under his own leadership called In The Moment, which was released in January, 2005.

The CD features some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians – Mike Murley, saxophones, Reg Schwager, guitar, and Barry Elmes, drums.

In The Moment features all original music composed by Collins.

Tom Szczesniak first arrived in Toronto in 1973, following a stint with the U.S. Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. Since that time, he has performed as a musician on the scores of over 100 feature films, numerous television shows and over 1,000 commercials.

As a composer and arranger, Szczesniak has used his writing skills to enhance a wide variety of cinematic, televised, commercial and theatrical productions, and has been an integral part of several highly-regarded music production houses, including Acrobat Music, Pursuit Communications and Trudel Productions.

Szczesniak has been honoured to be a multiple recipient of the Socan Award for Film and Television Music (1994/95/97/98/99 and 2000-2006) and the Emmy Award for Beetlejuice 1991.

In 1986, The International Film Festival of New York presented him with an award for his work on Ontario Lottery Commercials (Together).

Reg Schwager was born in the Netherlands in 1962. When he was six his family moved to Sudbury. There he took music lessons in recorder, flute and piano before settling on the guitar as his main instrument. By age fifteen he was playing jazz gigs in big band and small group settings and in duet with his sister Jeannette.

It was at two jazz workshops conducted by Phil Nimmons—at the University of Toronto (1978) and the Banff Centre (1979)—that Reg met some of the musicians he would begin working soon after he moved to Toronto in 1979.

Since then he has been working on the Toronto jazz scene and in other musical areas including new music and improvised music.

Schwager has written hundreds of jazz compositions, some with lyrics by Jeannette Lambert.

He has been the recipient of the Guitarist of the Year award from Canada’s National Jazz Awards for four consecutive years (2005-2008) .

The jazz music series will continue on Sunday, May 22 @ 4pm with John Sherwood & Friends.

Tickets can be purchased for each concert at www.gymc.ca or by calling the office at 519-837-1119.
