WELLINGTON COUNTY – Paramedic services week, recognizing the work and dedication of paramedics across Canada, is underway until May 28.
This year’s theme is “Faces of Paramedicine,” celebrating the out-of-hospital care paramedics have provided during the pandemic, and the care they will continue providing within the community long after the pandemic is over.
Each day this week from May 22 to 28 has a different topic with Monday focusing on 911 dispatchers, Tuesday on community paramedics, specialized care on Wednesday, educators on Thursday, and finally recognition day for all paramedics on Friday.
Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Services has supported home-bound patients during the pandemic since 2020 by giving vaccines at local clinics and in home settings, transferring patients between hospitals, and more recently, providing palliative care at home to improve patient comfort and support families at end of life.
“Paramedics as a whole have risen to the occasion before them to support our communities at their most vulnerable moments, at a time where they’re feeling vulnerable themselves,” paramedic chief Stephen Dewar stated in a press release.
“It’s no secret that paramedics bring selflessness with them to the job – it’s required. What goes unnoticed is their ability to see a community gap and seek ways to close it while improving patient care and increasing response times,” he added.
The service invites residents across the county, and in Guelph, to share thank-you messages and stories of experiences with local paramedics by tagging “@gwparamedic” on Twitter and Instagram.
