GUELPH – The City of Guelph is among five communities that will receive funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Green Municipal Fund to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The announcement was made June 23 by president of FCM Joanne Vanderheyden and parliamentary secretary to the minister of natural resources Marc Serré. The communities will receive a total of $1.2 million from the program.
The Canadian government is a partner in the project and has invested $1.65 billion in GMF since its inception.
Guelph will receive $174,550 to study the feasibility of building a net-zero-energy library as part of the innovative zero-carbon Baker District, as well as an additional $175,000 for a study that will support its work with Wellington County on reducing food waste.
Other municipalities receiving funding through the program include: Brockton, $598,000; Bruce County, $148,750; Georgian Bluffs, $71,800 and Warwick Township, $23,300.
“Local governments influence half of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. That means local action is critical,” Vanderheyden stated in a press release.
