The Guelph Synchronized Swim Club (GSSC) has had a winning start to the 2017 competitive season.
During the first two swim meets of the year, GSSC swimmer Lauren Irvine took home 1st place and two 2nd place wins for a combination of technical and routine performances.
At the Lisa Alexander Central/North/West Provincial Qualifier Jan. 21 to 22, Irvine swam to a first place finish in the 11 to 12 provincial figures category, beating out 155 other competitors.
Individual component
Figures are the individual component of synchronized swimming, and are made up of a combination of skills and positions that require control, strength and flexibility.
During the same competition, Irvine also took home a second place medal for her 11 to 12 national solo routine.
During the Waterloo Invitational on Jan. 28 and 29, the first full routine swim meet of the year, Irvine repeated her accomplishment with another second place finish in the national 11 to 12 solo category.
Other GSSC swimmers and teams also celebrated personal bests and excellent finishes during these two competitions, including a 4th place finish for the 13-to-15 competitive team in the 14-year-old provincial age category. Swimmers on this team include Hannah Wiley, Merit Hogen, Cora England, Kyla Smith, Kiersten Barr, Alexis Sanderson, Lauren Irvine and Georgia Smallacombe.
Brenna Stroud, 10, also placed 6th in the 11 to 12 provincial solos category during the Waterloo Invitational.
GSSC is looking forward to its next two competitions of the season: the Leslie Taylor Provincial Championships on Feb. 17, and West Regionals in Brantford March 11 and 12.
