Guelph Symphony Orchestras Brilliant Beethoven

THE GSO Show features an appearance by Guelph Youth Music Centre Youth Symphony, and two Concerto competition winners

The Guelph Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 10th anniversary season by featuring five concerts and five guest conductors. One of those will be selected the new resident conductor of the GSO starting in the 2011-12 season.

Audience members are invited to contribute to the selection through a survey available after each concert. The fourth concert of the season, Brilliant Beethoven, will be held Feb. 20, at River Run Centre at 3pm, with conductor Evan Mitchell.

Beethoven’s 7th Symphony is a major work, and the concert opens with Rossini’s overture The Italian Girl in Algiers, performed side-by-side with the Guelph Youth Music Centre Youth Symphony. As a special bonus, the show offers the joint winners of the annual Concerto competition: Hugo Lee plays Bellini’s Oboe Concerto, and Afendi Yusuf plays Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. “This will be an engaging concert,” said artistic director Simon Irving. “Our two outstanding young guest soloists are fine players, performing two lovely concertos. Beethoven’s 7th is an all-time favourite of many, players and audience alike. And the Rossini overture is great fun, especially with the talented players from the GYMC Symphony sitting in.”

Tickets for all concerts are available at River Run Centre at 519-763-3000.
