Guelph man paddle-boarding across Lake Ontario to support Greenbelt expansion

Christoph Kesting embarks this weekend on a 52 km voyage across Lake Ontario by paddle-board for the challenge, for fun, and to raise awareness and money for the greenbelt expansion work of the Wellington Water Watchers.

Kesting is an experienced paddle-board racer and a committed conservationist with a tremendous passion for protection of freshwater.

“Freshwater is the most protectable thing in the living-known universe,” said Kesting, “but in Canada is we take it for granted so much that we forget the ecological systems it takes to keep it clean, pure, and plentiful.”

“I think it’s wonderful that Christoph is using this event to draw attention to the relationship between environmental conservation and the health of water systems here in the Great Lakes region,” said Wellington Water Watchers executive director Arlene Slocombe.

“We need to put environmental protections in place now, as our province grows. The Wellington Water Waters is working hard to see our wetlands, river corridors, moraines, and other significant recharge areas included in an expanded greenbelt.”

Kesting joins some of the fastest paddle-boarders in the world in this weekend’s openwater paddling marathon.
