Guelph councillor seeks Liberal nomination

GUELPH – Guelph councillor Dominique O’Rourke has officially declared her intention to enter the race to replace Lloyd Longfield as Guelph’s next Liberal Member of Parliament.

Longfield declared his intention not to run again earlier this year.

“Wanting to run federally is something that has come out of my 25 years of volunteer and professional leadership and especially my experiences at council,” stated O’Rourke.

“I have seen the vital role that the federal government plays in the health and economic stability of a city and want to take my knowledge and passion for city building to the federal level.

“I’m ready to put in the hard work and effort that Lloyd Longfield has shown is needed to be Guelph’s voice and advocate in Ottawa.”

O’Rourke is the first person to declare their candidacy for the nomination.

“Our team has been building toward [this] for months now,” stated nomination campaign chair Pat Sorbara.

“We have a great candidate, an energized team and the tools to show the entire community why Dominique is the ideal person to represent Guelph in Ottawa.”

O’Rourke is fully bilingual and has decades of experience in the private, public and non-profit sectors.

She has a master’s degree  in leadership from the University of Guelph, is a former chair of the Guelph Community Foundation, taught at Conestoga College and was a 2018 recipient of the YM-YWCA Women of Distinction.

Until the timing of the nomination process is confirmed, the O’Rourke team will focus on connecting with community members and inviting them to register with the Liberal Party of Canada to vote at the nomination meeting.
