For its fourth concert of the season, Guelph Symphony Orchestra will present Northern Lights at 3pm on Feb 17 at River Run Centre.
The performance will feature three outstanding composers from northern countries. The centerpiece is Grieg’s piano concerto, performed by rising star Todd Yaniw.
Sibelius’ popular Karelia Suite begins the program, which is rounded out by Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol.
“We are delighted to again have Todd as our guest soloist,” said artistic director Simon Irving. “He is clearly a rising star, familiar to Guelph audiences, and his interpretation of this much-loved concerto will be memorable. The supporting pieces on the program also reflect the virility and beauty associated with the three composers from Northern countries.”
Yaniw has won numerous competitions and prizes, and is performing with the TSO, KWSO, and Windsor orchestra this season. He has toured in China and Europe as well as performing in the USA. He is completing his studies at the Glenn Gould Professional School, and his home is Kitchener
The GSO acknowledges the support of the Musagetes Fund at the Guelph Community Foundation for its 2007-2008 season.
The GSO is a semi-professional classical orchestra, based in Guelph and using primarily Guelph-area players. The ensemble consists of 35 to 54 players, depending on the repertoire requirements.
Tickets for all concerts are available at River Run Centre (519) 763-3000.
