Groups gather to consider collaboration

The Minto Cultural Roundtable hosted a meeting aimed at helping local community groups and event organizers work together.

Topics highlighted at the meeting included advertising and cross-promotion, event funding and event resource centres.

Town officials said the meeting was designed to provide “a chance for groups to come together and see what everyone is doing and how they may be able to work together.”

The meeting held on March 30 at the Harriston library, included a presentation by Elizabeth Bender of Centre Wellington, who offered insights on how a local event resource centre has become a boon to organizations in her community.

The concept, she explained, allows groups to save time and money when staging events by sharing resources with other community organizations. One group, for example, might own walkie talkies while another has a portable stage. Groups use their own equipment at no charge and pay “affordable rent” when using equipment owned by others in the network.

“We got so much good stuff out there in the community, so when were going out and putting on an event, there are resources available,” said Bender. However, she stressed, the program is not meant to circumvent local business, so doesn’t get into renting items like tables, chairs or cutlery.

The meeting, which was attended by about 30 people, also included:

– a guided tour of the Treasures of Minto website;

– a session on promoting events on the town event calendar; and

– an opportunity for participants to collaborate and  discuss cross promotion of events.
