MINTO – A local group compiling a history of the hamlet of Teviotdale is seeking to partner with the Town of Minto on fundraising to create display areas for the material.
Minto resident Wayne Martin told council at the April 25 meeting a core group of nine volunteers, including Minto councillor Paul Zimmerman and town treasurer Gordon Duff, have been working on the project.
“There’s been a fair amount of dialogue, there’s been a fair amount of written material about Minto Township and Teviotdale and the surrounding area,” said Martin.
“We were assisted by a lot of (organizations) in Minto, the Harriston and Mapleton historical societies, (the Town of) Minto and Wellington County.”
Martin said the group is currently negotiating with the county to provide space for an outdoor display on property adjacent to the Wellington County OPP Teviotdale station.
The group already has a verbal agreement for a private site where a display could be located, he added.
“We’d like to have an outside site to put … basically six panels that are six feet high, four feet wide and will be based in a structure,” he explained.
“We’re in the process of fundraising … revenue is part of making a project work,” Martin noted.
“We’d like to formally partner with the Town of Minto to help us manage the fundraising, donations and stuff, through the town.”
Martin added, “One of the reasons we want Minto to be involved is the county likes to have the local town involved.” Martin pointed out the group is hoping the project “will help enhance the economy of Teviotdale.
“It’s a very active, busy little hamlet,” he stated.
While council didn’t take specific action on the request at the meeting, Mayor Dave Turton expressed support for the project.
“Thank you very much for taking this on. I know that you’ve got some great volunteers there working with you and we wish you all the luck,” said the mayor.
