Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington and the Cody Sheppard Project are holding a memorial golf tournament on Sept. 9 in honour of Cody Sheppard, who died by suicide in 2017.
Sheppard was a local athlete who competed in lacrosse and wrestling. In high school he was awarded several medals from championships around the world.
His family said his mental health story started when he was admitted to the hospital with depression and anxiety in April 2016.
“Cody was strong. Cody was a fighter. Sadly, at just 20 years old, Cody was unable to fight any longer,” stated his family in a release.
He died by suicide on Oct. 20, 2017.
“With the death of our dear son came the beginning of the Cody Sheppard Project,” said the family, in hopes of “stopping the silence.”
That’s where BBBS Centre Wellington comes in. The community hub for which it is fundraising aims to be a place to serve the needs of youth.
On Sept. 9, The Cody Sheppard Project committee is holding a memorial golf tournament at Wildwinds Golf Club to raise money for the future community hub.
“Let’s stop the silence and get our kids the resources and help they need,” stated the family.
