Grose wins 4-H scholarship and award

Alma area student Nick Grose was  recently warded the 4-H education scholarship and outstanding senior 4-H member award.
During his seven years in 4-H, Grose completed 30 4-H clubs – encompassing livestock, gardening, scrapbook, conservation, public speaking, photography, drama, and community service clubs. He has served as a 4-H youth leader for six clubs.
Grose was a delegate to the 4-H provincial leadership camp and was one of six delegates representing Ontario at the National 4-H citizenship conference in Ottawa.
In addition to the 4-H scholarship, Grose was awarded outstanding senior 4-H member  award.
“Nick is an exemplary 4-H member,” said  4-H president Pam Woodhouse. “He completed numerous clubs, as well as other volunteer work in the community.”
Eligible 4-H members were nominated by 4-H leaders, and selection was based on their involvement not only in 4-H, but also their volunteer work and leadership in their community and school.
“Nick has matured from a junior member to a senior member and youth leader,” said Mapleton 4-H leader Lynne Flewwelling.
“He has always been a very [active] member, taking on roles or volunteering to help wherever it was needed.
“Nick has served as club president and press reporter during numerous projects before taking on the youth leader role for the past three years.”
Flewwelling called Grose “a great asset to our club and a mentor to a number of our junior members over the years.
“He is committed to 4-H and is motivating to those around him.”
Flewwelling added that since Grose left the club in the fall to pursue his post secondary education, she has already noticed the leadership skills that are missing,
Grose is actively involved in his community, including  with his school; church groups; volunteering with Silver Lake camp, Luther Marsh youth day, Doon Heritage Crossroad, and the Toronto soup kitchen; and as a fork lift driver and packer.
Grose was a gold medal winner at the Skills Canada provincial and national competitions, and was awarded Youth Citizen of the Year for Centre Wellington  in 2006 for his volunteer endeavors. He is  currently  attending Confederation College in Thunder Bay, studying aviation, with plans to be a bush pilot.
